Singing Slovenia – free concert at Brigflatts

25 Jun 2025

18.00—21.30

Brigflatts Quaker Meeting House near Sedbergh

Join us at Brigflatts Quaker Meeting House, in Sedbergh, Cumbria, for a concert celebrating Slovenia Statehood Day and 20 years of Lakeland Voice’s singing exchanges with this country (and 20 years of town twinning between Sedbergh and Zrece.)
Singers from Lakeland Voices, and friends, have recently returned from singing in Slovenia alongside several Slovenian choirs and many local singers – as well as on the train from the UK across continental Europe.
They will be joined for this concert by Bentham Voices who sing each week in Bentham Quaker Meeting House and share many of the same songs.
Both choirs are led by David Burbidge.
Songs will include Zdravljica, the only overtly pacifist anthem in the world: “Long live all nations who long for that bright day, when over Earth’s habitation, no war, no strife, shall hold it’s sway; Who long to see, all people free, no more shall foes but neighbours be.”
Other songs will reflect Slovenia’s championing of the natural environment, beekeeping, and internationalism, in both Slovenian and English. As well as inside this beautiful and atmospheric Quaker Meeting House, we will sing outside near the beehive donated by the Slovenian Embassy two years ago, now full of bees!
The concert is free – but donations are requested towards Brigflatts charities. There will be songs to join in with – or just listen.
A Slovenian stew (Jota) will be provided for supper.                                                                              There is also an afternoon with Lakeland Voices singing songs from Slovenia, the UK and beyond on Saturday afternoon, 2.30pm June 21 at Cafe 98, 98 Highgate, Kendal, Cumbria – all welcome and many well known songs from around the world to join in with.
