Songs from the Balkan heartlands, Salisbury

18 Sep 2026—20 Sep 2026

Residential

Sarum College, Salisbury

Learn songs from different Balkan cultures and traditions. A fantastic opportunity to discover songs from harmony singing traditions that go back thousands of years, all in the heart of the medieval cathedral city of Salisbury.

Sarum College is based in historic grade I-listed buildings in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close. It’s a five-minute walk from the High Street with shops, cafes, and a twice-weekly market. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the railway station. The weekend includes all meals, tuition, and tea/ coffee breaks. Although Sarum College is a Christian centre, this singing weekend will be secular and all are welcome, regardless of religious beliefs.

The harmony singing tradition of the Balkan peninsular stretches back thousands of years. Folk songs from this part of Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, etc.) are sung as part of everyday life by everyday people, not professional performers. The songs are characterised by unusual rhythms (which are usually danced), by delicious harmonies, and by vocal styles and ornamentations that carry far across the mountains.
