I believe it is our birthright to sing, dance, make music and be creative. We have developed a culture of musicians and audience, and been taught value judgements largely through the education system, about what is good and bad music; what is good and bad art etc rather than allowing the joy of the process as a fundamental right and part of the human condition.
Musicianship, musicality and instrumental and singing technique can all be learned. Ears can be trained. Pretty much no-one is really tone deaf. These are learnable skills, especially if our mindset and inner dialogue is kind and supportive.
In our very recent past we would have all sung and danced and celebrated together. We had work songs and lullabies, Young children don’t care about how Mum sounds, they love to hear her sing.
Everyone has a right to enjoy making music, however they sound. And like anything, the more we do, the more confident we get and the more able we are to make more of the sounds that please us.
I run inclusive song circles and community choirs where all voices are welcome and celebrated. We sing simple, joyful and meaningful songs. People are sometimes encouraged to play and experiment with improvisation in an encouraging and non judgemental way. But this is not expected. Beginners and people who want to sing but think they can’t are very welcome 🙏❤️
Celebrate the Earth, the elements, the seasonal cycle and our connection with songs and chants that honour Mother Earth, sending healing out with our voices, reconnecting us to deeper parts of ourselves and All Our Relations.
The songs are simple, yet powerful, especially when sung as a group. No experience necessary. Suitable for beginners and those with more experience might enjoy adding harmony parts. We will also try some simple rounds. We will start with simple warmups for breath, body and voice.
We shall sing some of our familiar chants and some more autumnal ones.
Most importantly the songs are usually felt as nurturing, joyful and uplifting, together
