Additional information

A journey to find my voice started with Frankie Armstrong when I was in my early 30’s, was interrupted by motherhood and family life, and re-found in 2014 when I joined the Natural Voice Network and went on a week-long training and deep dive with Frankie and her partner Darien Pritchard.  Then came vocal improvisation with Briony Greenhill (Briony Greenhill Music) – and I’m still studying with her seven years later.  It’s now called CVI – Collaborative Vocal Improvisation – and my love for this artform is unstoppable.  Other teachers are Guillermo Rozenthuler (Circulab) who is a strong influence in my development as a leader through his circle song training; Rhiannon, (Rhiannon Music) with whom I studied in Italy in 2019, and online during lockdown, and Leading Musica Do Circulo, brilliant teachers in Brazil with whom I study online.

Stepping into leadership has been a slow and deliberate process for me.  I always try to stay true to the brilliant teaching I am still receiving, I continue to learn and skill share with my colleagues – resourcing and supporting each other is the foundation of our vocal improv community.  We practise the different forms together regularly, honing our ideas and delivery, to bring you the best experience we can.   What I love most about this way of singing together is the warmth and connectivity it brings, at the same time as offering a way in to your personal journey with your voice – wherever you’re at with it. We aim to roll out easy, fun ways of creating music together that supports everyone, with sensitivity, and without judgement.  You don’t have to be able to read music or know a song, we can all make music together in just one meeting!

My strengths are teaching CVI to beginners (expect fun and games and some surprising music!), leading circle songs, and holding short courses in unlocking creativity through imaginative voice work.  A principal aim is to hold space securely and without judgement.  The rest of my life includes 35 years as a student of Iyengar Yoga, a couple of art degrees, including an MA in Social Sculpture, working as a gilder (laying gold leaf), and leading gluten-free baking workshops.  I have just become a grandmother for the first time, I love animals, and open water swimming (mostly in summer!) and being outside in nature as much as I can.

I’m available for one-off or for series of workshops, either delivered solo or co-led with one of my colleagues.  Contact is through this website, by email: nolanimprov@googlemail.com
