Curious? What to expect from the course.

The weekly sessions are suitable for singers of all abilities, without the pressure of a public performance. Each term, singers have the opportunity to learn new and broad repertoire, arrangements and folk style singing from an established folk singer and educator, with all material being taught by ear. They learn harmonies that they can sing with others, but the focus is less on multi-part arrangements and more on developing as folk singers in a supportive environment. They get to learn about the context of songs, listen to different interpretations of songs, see examples from archives and field recordings and learn about the tutor’s approach to their singing and folk songs.

World-class folk tutors in your living room!

All tutors bring their own flavour to the classes. For example, George Samsone in 2024, shared his knowledge and specialism of queer folk songs.

We’ve been fortunate to work with some wonderful tutors, including Angeline Morrison, Emily Portman, James Fagan, Jess Arrowsmith, Jim Causley, Lisa Knapp, and most recently, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne.

We are a small friendly group singing a wide variety of songs, all taught by ear, so no experience needed.
We sing in unison, rounds and 2/3/4/5 part songs: from My Bonnie to Abba, the African continent to Spain, old and new; we simply have fun, and everyone says they feel good when they go home!
Pay as you go, so it’s ok to drop in any week, tea/coffee included. Contact me for dates, price per session (£3 at February 2025) and any other info needed.
For fun and well-being, harmony singing is so rewarding! All welcome.

Come and join us for a relaxed, friendly afternoon of sound and song, led by Marianne Powell.

We’ll learn simple songs by ear, and sing together for fun.

No experience needed, and you don’t have to read sheet music – this is open to all.

Tea and biscuits included.

This class focuses on connecting to the voice as part of the body. These sessions include movement improvisation – moving from sensation and imagination – and somatic work, to ground ourselves and centre our awareness in the body. We work with the breath and vibrations that make up our unique sound, using embodied voice techniques to wake up the voice from within, working towards singing in harmony and vocal improvisation.

This is an accessible class for anyone wanting to find/re-find/nurture their voice in a supportive, judgement-free space. All bodies and voices are welcome.
